Gourmet Road Bike Tour
Late afternoon pick up at airport/city & transfer to Lanzerac Estate in Stellenbosch, where we enjoy a wine tasting, followed by a gourmet dinner before settling down for the night.
DAY 2 –Stellenbosch to Tulbagh 119km
The ride starts with bit of a kick up Helshoogte Pass, then spin out to legs to Wellington, followed by a real Cape classic - Baines Kloof Pass. The climb is familiar to many of you, but this is not one that you can ever get tired of - 11km ascent and a sweeping downhill to the Breede River and across the valley, ending at Tulbagh, where we overnight at the Country Hotel.
DAY 3 – Tulbagh to Piekenierskloof 117km
We cycle back out along the road towards Wolesley, but keep straight and head up Mitchells Pass; climbing 300m.It is a cruise through Ceres and on to Prince Alfred’s Hamlet and then the road climbs a further 600m to the top of the Gydo Pass at the gateway to the Witzenberg Mountains. The fruit orchards are substantial but they are overshadowed by the mountains, which dominate the scenery with their rugged sandstone sculptures. Where the road turns to dirt we load up and shuttle over the scenic Middelburg Pass to Citrusdal. We spend the night at Piekenierskloof Mountain Resort, with sweeping views across the valley below.
Day 4 – Piekenierskloof – Draaihoek 129km
We start the day with a 45 min shuttle to Clanwilliam, then embark on a spectacular 12 km climb up Pakhuis Pass, which takes us into heart of the rugged Cederberg Wilderness area. We turn around at the top, fly down again and head due west for the coast through the potato growing area of the Sandveld on a ‘flat’ road that passes through Graafwater, Leipoldville, Verlorenvlei and Elands Bay to the secluded oasis of Draaihoek, set on the beach.
DAY 5 – Draaihoek to Paternoster 88km
We head out through the rugged West Coast town of Veldrif on the mouth of the Berg River, then cycle on to Paternoster. This is the quintessential west coast village where fishermen still (but only just) row out and haul in the ‘catch of the day’. Our accommodation in a luxurious boutique hotel is not nearly as basic as the purists would have, but that local, raw West Coast feeling is inescapable and part of the charm.
DAY 6 – Paternoster to Yserfontein 92km
The road gently climbs as we retrace our steps back to Vredenberg and then down towards Langebaan, past the iron smelting plants of Saldanha, contrasting with the blue lagoon to our right. As we enter the West Coast National Park, the urban sprawl is replaced by tranquillity with an abundance of Renosterveld, Fynbos and tortoises. Out the other end we do the N7 for 11km before veering off to our outdoor restaurant on the beach at Yserfontein, where we shower and enjoy a delicious seafood lunch before shuttling 100km to the airport and Cape Town.
