*2018 dates to be advised*

This promises to be a fantastic mid-winter break with an intimate group! As usual, there will be short-cuts and/or shuttles available for those who might be daunted by distances or gradients. The terrain is NOT TECHNICAL AT ALL and suitable for road and mountain bikers alike.

*2018 itinerary to be advised*

2017 itinerary:

Day 1: Meet and greet in Port Elizabeth

Late afternoon pick up at PE airport ( aim for 16h00) and transfer to Zuurberg MountainVillage, spectacularly set on a mountain top, overlooking Addo Elephant National park. Here we settle in, check bikes and prep for the week ahead. www.addo.co.za

Day 2: Zuurberg to Somerset East 90 km

As we turn out of the hotel PE is still almost visible to the south and after a few climbs we top out on a ridge where it is quite likely that Denys reitz the famed Rebel Boer commando must have gazed down at his pusuers across the plains of the Eastern Cape. Our descent onto the plains is rugged and then there is a long gradual pull to the town of Somerset East in the distance. We overnight at a number of B&B s situated faily close to each other with
dinner out on the town...

Day 3:Somerset East to Bedford 80km

Another beautiful climb up the pass past some of the oldest Knysna-Amatole Montane forests in the country. There are dairy and hunting farms up here and we cross the Great Fish and Baviaans Rivers close to their cofluence, before looping around to the historic town of Bedford. We overnight at the newly re-furbished Duke of Bedford Hotel – an unexpected surprise in this sleepy EC town www.dukeofbedford.co.za

Day 4: Bedford to Katberg 95km

We ride the road to Adelaide and then start gently climbing up into the hills and through the Mpofu forests and Katberg forests, ending at The Katberg Spa & Golf Estate http://katleisure.co.za/hotels/katberg-eco-golf-estate-2/

Day 5: Katberg to Hogsback 50 km

Dropping down through Seymore, before a brutal climb up the other side of the valley, we then we do a circuatous ride to Hog 3, site of J.R.R Tolkien’s inspiration for Lord of The Rings. This is where the Giant Snake of Xhosa Lore resides – hopefully it does not develop into a tornado, as legend has it, while we are riding here…It is also the same mythical snake that inspired JRR Tolkien’s Smaug the dragon. We overnight at Hogsback Arminel Hotel nestled amidst in the mountains & indigenous forests http://katleisure.co.za/hotels/arminel-hotel-hogsback/

Day 6 Hogsback to Stutterheim 72 km:

We cycle out on forestry roads past Hog 3 and then down through the Keiskammahoek Forest. We are now riding in the frontier territories where Africa’s 100 year war was fought between the British settlers and the Xhosa from 1779 to 1879. We should be arriving in Stutterheim in time for showers & lunch before heading back to the East London airport. Aim for a  flight departing approx 17h00.
