Winter Warmer | MTB

Please be aware that this tour takes you deep into the Wilderness and you might experience some whole days without any cell phone reception…

19 – 24 July 2018

This promises to be a fantastic mid-winter break with an intimate group!

As usual, there will be short-cuts and/or shuttles available for those who might be daunted by distances or gradients. The terrain is not technical at all and suitable for road and mountain bikers alike.

Day 1: Afternoon pick-up & transfer 2.5 hours to Piekenierskloof Mountain Retreat outside Citrusdal

Day 2: Citrusdal to Clanwilliam (95.5 km / 1324 ascent)

We ease into the ride with 20km of tar along the ridge of the mountains and then follow the Olifant’s River before climbing up into the Cederberg Mountains, skirting past Algeria and then a gradual decline all the way past Clanwilliam Dam and into town.

Day 3: Clanwilliam to Clanwilliam (93 km / 1543m ascent)

Our ride continues down the river before heading into the hills, where the land is dry and expansive as we loop around the mountains, surrounded by amazing rock formations. We enjoy a local lunch at Travellers Rest, before cycling back via the infamous Pakhuis Pass – a short, steep climb, followed by a long downhill into Clanwilliam.

Day 4: Clanwilliam to Kromrivier (71 km / 1416m ascent)

If anyone feels cheated at this point, they can leave early and cycle the 20km tar climb up Pakhuis Pass. The bulk of riders, however, will load up and transfer up the pass. From here we head off-road on the donkey cart route through Heuningvlei and on through the missionary town of Wuppertal. On the other side of this sleepy town is a steep and memorable concrete climb, before the ride levels out on sometimes rather sandy, but the perfectly rideable track, all the way to Kromrivier Resort in the heart of the Cederberg proper.

Day 5: Kromrivier to Mount Ceder (47km / 899m ascent)

This is a short day, allowing for some exploration of the local rock art sites and awe-inspiring rock formations at the Stadsaal (City Hall) and Truitjieskraal, before cruising along the well maintained dirt road to Mount Ceder Resort for a leisurely late lunch and a relaxing afternoon to soak in the tranquillity of this special wilderness area.

Day 6: Mount Ceder to Op Die Berg and Shuttle to Town (49.4 km / 761m ascent)

There are still some big rollers to contend with as we head southwards down the valley between the mountains. After approx. 50km we load up and head back to the city, stopping for lunch at a secret location en route. If you are catching a flight home, do not book before 18h00.

R12,850 per person sharing. For a single supplement, add R2,500 but is subject to availability. Please note: this means that you will not share a room, but it does not necessarily guarantee a private bathroom every night.
