Mega Tasting Day – Cheese, Wine, and Chocolate

Everyone will go through the cellar and be taught how wines are made from start to finish.

Cellar Tour: Everyone will go through the cellar and be taught how wines are made from start to finish. They will learn how to differentiate between different cultivars by using their senses, ie, the way the wine looks, the way it smells and the way it tastes. This information is vital for the next stage of the day.

Blind Tasting: Suitable for drinkers & non-drinkers. Each person will have a tasting card* on which they will write their names and whether they are drinkers or non-drinkers. They will also have a sheet of paper describing the wines that they are tasting.

However, they will not know which Cultivar it is, for example, Merlot, Shiraz, Chardonnay and etc.

From what they have learnt in the cellar tour and from the descriptions they are reading they have to guess which wine they are tasting and write it down on their tasting card in numerical order to which they taste. The non-tasters will have to guess from the colour and smell of the wine.

Once all the wines have been tasted the cards will be marked and a group total will be established.

Each member will write down the wine they think they are tasting in the order in which they taste. The cards will be marked by the person sitting next to them. At this stage, each person will think they are playing for themselves but they are in actual playing for a team prize.

Cheese Tasting: At Fairview wine estate – a brief description of the cheese-making process, followed by a tasting. Groups must answer questions pertaining to the cheeses & fill in answers on their group questionnaires.

Chocolate Tasting: In Franschhoek – a demonstration of chocolate making followed by a tasting. Groups must answer questions pertaining to the chocolates & fill in answers on their group questionnaires.

A picnic lunch and further informal tasting will be enjoyed at a wine farm.
