Day 15: Marvelous Mestia
After sailing downhill into the incredibly quaint little town of Mestia, we headed straight for the central square and adjacent bar. Here we met up again with world cycle tourist, Nick from Birmingham, who’d left us in his dust earlier in the day. He’s been on the road for 3 months so far and plans to be away for 3 years! As are long term young travellers on a budget, he was eagerly grateful for the beer we offered. Steve even got a real cappuccino – that decided it – definite 2-night stay, as clearly this town has a lot to offer. En route to our accommodation we were greeted jovially by the Cha Cha truck drivers from earlier and on our way to dinner later, we were stopped again.
“Hey hello, remember me? ” The tour guide with the hiking group from Roshka 7 days ago. We were feeling thoroughly popular! Our guest house is on a dodgy looking street, which we never would have ventured down, except for the recommendation of some Danish hikers and sure enough, it’s clean, comfy, en suite and I have a view of a tower from my bed! We slept until 09h00 this morning, then hit the cappuccino joint again for breakfast and WiFi. We then embarked on Mission Contingency for the freewheel hub and sought out Carina, a local German living in Mestia & running a bike rental outfit. She was most amenable and we now have a plan in hand should things go pear-shaped. At present we waiting out the midday heat, then we’re going to take our bikes up the mountain on the ski lift to explore & ride back down…
