Garden Route to Klein Karoo

The Klein Karoo Mountain Bike tour takes us from the lush landscape of the Garden Route into the starkly beautiful & arid, Klein Karoo and over some of the region’s iconic mountain passes.

Day 1 – Arrive in George after 16h00

 Late afternoon pick up at George airport ( *aim for 16h00 or later) and transfer to our accommodation in the city centre. Here we settle in, check bikes and prep for the week ahead.

Day 2 – George to Oudtshoorn – 78km/ 1024m

We cycle through town, then up and over the imposing Montagu Pass and along a series of rollers into the heart of the Klein Karoo. We spend the night at Mooiplaas guest House just outside Oudtshoorn. Day 3 – Oudtshoorn to Prince Albert – 94km/1808m

Fast, rolling riding along the scenic Lategansvlei Road to the base of Swartberg Pass, then up & over to Prince Albert. The climb from this side is steeper, but shorter than from Prince Albert and the descent is 21 km long with numerous winding switchbacks. We enjoy a sumptuous lunch at The Lazy Lizard before wending our way though town to the Swartberg Hotel.

Day 4 – Prince Albert to De Opstel – 101km/1000m

We begin with a 47 km shuttle on tar, then hop on the bikers and turn off into farmlands for 20km, followed by a 19km downhill through the dramatic Meiring’s Poort to de Rust. From here it is mainly flat and downhill to De Opstal Guest House – a welcoming gem and an oasis in the heart of a harsh landscape.  www.deopstal.co.za

Day 5 – De Opstel to Louvain Farm – 70km/1400m

Today incorporates some great off-roading, which leads to the recently refurbished farmstay at Louvain, where you can expect some serious firerside cheer at one of the various bomas designed for outdoor dining.

Day 6 – Louvain to George – 62km/ 664m

Today we head back towards the Garden Route via a delightful, gnarly old wagon trail, which takes us out the back of Lovain farm, then along forestry roads to lunch, after which we load up and transfer to the airport at George. Do not book flights before 18h00.

*E-Bikes are welcome on all our tours. Now anyone who can ride a bike can be included!

Includes

  • Accommodation for 5 nights (as laid out above, subject to availability)
  • All meals from dinner on Day 1 – lunch on Day 6
  • All transport, incl * group airport transfers
  • Vehicle back-up on all riding days. The vehicle will follow on the trail WHERE POSSIBLE and where not, it will meet up with the riders at the closest exit point.
  • Transfer of bicycles & luggage
  • Drinks & snacks en route daily while cycling

Excludes

  • All items of a personal nature, e.g. tel calls, laundry, etc
  • All drinks not dispensed at the raodside, incl. soft drinks, fancy coffees, bottled water & all alcoholic beverages
  • Bicycle rental – bring your own bike (or rental bikes available on request)
  • Airfares
  • Bike courier fees
  • *Any additional shuttles for late arrival/ early departure
  • Gratuities, except for meals

    PLEASE NOTE

    All participants are required to sign a copy of our indemnity form and wear a helmet at all times while cycling.

    Deposit – A non-refundable deposit of 25% of the total tour fee is required to confirm the booking. This must be paid within 7 days from receipt of invoice or your dates will be automatically released.

    Balance Payment – Balance of payment is required no later than 8 weeks (56 days) prior to departure. Late applicants may, however, join the tour subject to availability.

    Cancellations – If the cancellation is received up to 56 days or more prior to departure, the appropriate deposit will be forfeited. In the event of cancellation less than 56 days prior to departure, the following charges will apply:

    • 56 – 42 days – 50% of total fare
    • 41 to 28 days – 85% of total fare
    • less than 28 days – 100% of total fare
